At first we think "Why do we have a track meet on MLK Day, a day off to remember a great leader of the civil rights movement in this country, with the famous speech of having a dream that all God's children will come together ..." and I hope you all know the rest. If not, look it up. On Monday Jan. 17, on this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday it was a great example of how far we've come in this movement all God's children of the DCL came together, teams representing different nationalities, religions, and genders competing in the joyous event of indoor track and field.
The Newton South Sprint Group had outstanding performances all around. Personal best were abounds in this meet at the Boston University complex. From the senior Boys, Patrick Kuffour 6.76, and Grant Henderson 6.98 ran excellent times in their 55M dash. Two 2nd place crowns for the Senior Co-Captains, Jeffrey Alkins' Long Jump 18'5" and Alex Karys in the Shot Put 39'3". Another Senior, Dan Connolly captured a marginal win in the 55M hurdles 8.43, it was also his personal best. Junior, Youssef Elkorchi took a 1st place in the high jump 6'0" and a 2nd place in the 300M 36.83. Also juniors, Andrew O'Hagan 3rd in the 300M 37.35, 2nd in High Jump 5'8", and Brooks Remy's 2nd place 600M in 1:29.41 were major contributors for the win against Lincoln-Sudbury.
The Sprint Girls are getting faster! Senior, Madeline Frieze ran an outstanding 300M race in 44.18 along with both freshmen Lizzie Fineman and Charlotte Huth in tow running 44.52 and 45.35 respectively. Hmm, Fineman and Huth...where did I hear those names before..? Madeline Frieze 7.84 and Lizzie Fineman 7.94 teamed up in the 55M dash as well. Senior, Avery Forrow is now looking better in the High Jump 4'6". And Sophomore, Kathleen Garrity ran a personal best in the 55M hurdles 10.97.
So...This track meet had a lot of great races both with speed and ethnic faces...
Now, I wouldn't know what to say if we have a meet on thanksgiving day..?
