D1 report

With the LS/NS dual meet on Monday, we ran only a few teams. One of the goals was to get qualifying times for States in the girls 4x8 (yes), boys 4x2 (yes) and girls 4x2 (yes), and to get in a good time for the sprint medley, which is a possible race for Nationals at the Armory.

Full results can be found at:

NS and NN had a huge duel in the sprint medley relay. Kathy opened up with a 1:39 600m split, which the announcer said is the 6th fastest 600m this year in Massachusetts. Her 800 was 2:14. NS held the lead up until the last leg, where North had a super strong anchor. North won in 4:15 and South took 2nd in 4:16. It was an impressive race on both sides. I should point out that there were also two freshmen running for South in that race.

The announcer said that the NS time was the 10th fastest SMR in the country and NN's was the 6th fastest.

NN boys won their SMR in a 3:35, which the announcer said was the fastest in the country. Unfortunately I didn't get their splits. AB's leadoff split a 1:57.7 to give them a good start, but their lead got whittled down and North's anchor ran a superb leg for the win.

In the 4x2, Mary Testa, Lizzie Fineman, Char Huth, and Madeline Frieze teamed up to run a 1:54.4 (by my watch) with everyone under 30 and clean handoffs. Again, two freshmen on this one. State qualifying time is 1:57.24, so it looks like they made States.

Youssef El Korchi, Marini Lopci, Patrick Kuffour and Jeff Alkins ran in the boys 4x2, in 1:35.28 (my watch), all splitting in the 23-24 zone. This also qualifies for States (qual. time is 1:39.24). Jeff held off a late closing Chelmsford anchor to win the heat and take 6th overall.

The funny 0.24's in the qualifying times have to do with conversion from hand to FAT time, in case you're curious where on Earth that came from. My own modest contribution was to help them figure out the handoffs at yesterday's practice, which was totally fun for me!

If you're curious about State qualifying standards, check here, but you have to scroll down quite a bit.

Qualifying marks for the DCL Championship meet is equivalent to the qualifying standard for the D4 states.

There were some great performances by Andover, North and AB. Lowell edged North in the 4x2, winning in 1:32.02

If anyone wants their relay splits e-mail me: huth (at) physics (dot) harvard (dot) edu .

I generally don't post splits unless it's something like Kathy's, or if everyone PR's at the same time (rare, but it has happened).
