DCL JV Championship was held at NS on Wed. 26 Jan.

If little acorns grow mighty oaks, then Newton South has a new greenhouse!
Newton South was the host for the DCL J.V. track championships held last Wednesday in the fieldhouse. This was a day to spotlight the developing track and field athletes. What a remarkable event and with so much excitement. It commenced with several member of this coed track team singing the national anthem. The melody of their voices had the crowd mesmerized. Some of the visiting competitors requested that they perform at the Varsity DCL Championships too.

It has been 5 years since Newton South hosted the DCL J.V. Championships in the fieldhouse and this year's event has proven to be one of the most exciting meets for south's developing track stars.
Freshman sprinter Ester Cho ran the 3rd fastest time 8.10 in the 55M dash, with Sasha Restrepo finishing 6th 8.58. Another freshman, Rosalie Goldberg ran away from the pack and took 1st place in the 300M dash in 49.1, with her teammate Mikayla Bogart in tow for 3rd place with a 50.2. Both freshmen, Anna Alsop and Jina An took 1, 2 in the Shot Put with throws of 25'-5" and 24'-5" respectively.
From the Boys, Junior, Aaron Zheng's 41.6 was 2nd fastest in the 300M, while freshman Cornelius Funk ran an outstanding 300M race and placed 6th with 43.7. Both Juniors, Christopher Wong and Justin Lew had a remarkable day setting their new personal best in the Long Jump; 17'9" for Wong and 15'10" for Lew. Also Junior, Stephen Orken placed 1st in the Shot Put with 33'-1". Freshman, Nick Marino was 5th fastest in the 55M dash 7.42.

This Coed Sprint Group feed on challenging workouts and sports discipline, soiled with the support from good team leadership and sportsmanship. And, family, friends and alumni provide the water needed for these developing track athletes to blossom into Newton South's mighty oaks!

NS v LS dual meet - highlights

At first we think "Why do we have a track meet on MLK Day, a day off to remember a great leader of the civil rights movement in this country, with the famous speech of having a dream that all God's children will come together ..." and I hope you all know the rest. If not, look it up. On Monday Jan. 17, on this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday it was a great example of how far we've come in this movement all God's children of the DCL came together, teams representing different nationalities, religions, and genders competing in the joyous event of indoor track and field.
The Newton South Sprint Group had outstanding performances all around. Personal best were abounds in this meet at the Boston University complex. From the senior Boys, Patrick Kuffour 6.76, and Grant Henderson 6.98 ran excellent times in their 55M dash. Two 2nd place crowns for the Senior Co-Captains, Jeffrey Alkins' Long Jump 18'5" and Alex Karys in the Shot Put 39'3". Another Senior, Dan Connolly captured a marginal win in the 55M hurdles 8.43, it was also his personal best. Junior, Youssef Elkorchi took a 1st place in the high jump 6'0" and a 2nd place in the 300M 36.83. Also juniors, Andrew O'Hagan 3rd in the 300M 37.35, 2nd in High Jump 5'8", and Brooks Remy's 2nd place 600M in 1:29.41 were major contributors for the win against Lincoln-Sudbury.
The Sprint Girls are getting faster! Senior, Madeline Frieze ran an outstanding 300M race in 44.18 along with both freshmen Lizzie Fineman and Charlotte Huth in tow running 44.52 and 45.35 respectively. Hmm, Fineman and Huth...where did I hear those names before..? Madeline Frieze 7.84 and Lizzie Fineman 7.94 teamed up in the 55M dash as well. Senior, Avery Forrow is now looking better in the High Jump 4'6". And Sophomore, Kathleen Garrity ran a personal best in the 55M hurdles 10.97.
So...This track meet had a lot of great races both with speed and ethnic faces...
Now, I wouldn't know what to say if we have a meet on thanksgiving day..?

LS NS matchup - DCL Meet 4

The meet was held at BU, so the runners could wear spikes. The BU track is fast, with a more steeply angled bank than Reggie. The uphill/downhill running in lanes takes a bit of getting used to in the 300m, and barrel starts in the 600m. Although it's quick, your legs always feel beat up after racing there. I've run a 800 and a 400 there. Starting in lane 6 in spikes in the 400 feels like you're balancing on the side of a mountain.

This was one of the tough dual pairings in the DCL, AB being the other. The boys won 50-45, even with a DQ'ed 4x4 (more on that later). The girls were simply outgunned by some of the LS stars, like Lauren Ready in the hurdles, dash and long jump, but we got some great PR's in, more qualifiers for States, and outstanding performances by freshmen and sophomores.

Maybe the biggest news was some of the individual performances by non-LS, non-NS runners.

Rebecca Robinson of Arlington ran 7.20 55m dash, and a 38.96 300m. If I simply multiply the 300m time by 4/3 that is a 52 second 400m. More realistically, it converts to maybe a 55, but you get the idea.

David Blaides of Concord Carlisle ran a 1:24.53 600m, and Curt Owen of AB ran a 2:34.93 1000m.

On the girls side - Madeline Frieze stepped up with two big PR's - one in the 55m (7.84) and winning her heat in the 300m (44.18). Lauren ready of LS took 1st in the heat, but frosh Lizzie Fineman ran a strong 7.94 for a 2-3 finish. NS ran 1-3 in the 300m with another Frieze -Fineman pairing.

NS also took 2-3 in the mile with sophomore Emily Caggiano and freshman Lucrecia Aguilar both in 5:38 running well together and qualifying for States.

The start of the 1000m was something of a surprise, as I was expecting Kathy O'Keefe to go rocketing out to the lead, but, instead she splitted in the 37-39 range for the first 4 200's. I finally caught on that she was helping pace frosh Anna Rhatigan and Hannah Friedman and helped them along to state qualifying times. Kathy took 1st and Anna took 3rd.

Kathy was our top shot-putter, getting points up for a 2nd place, and anchored the 4x4, making up a 20m deficit to take the win for NS.

On the boys side, David Melly doubled in the 1 mile and 2 mile, doing what he had to do. In the mile, he ran a conservative 4:35 to take 1st in the dual matchup against LS, and then paced himself in the deuce, finally rocketing a 33 sec final 200 for a 9:42.4

Senior Danny Connolly shows what perseverance over the years can do. I recall helping coach him in hurdles when he was a freshman. Some events like hurdles, the jumps and shot take a long time to get good at - a lot of dots have to be connected. He took first in the LS matchup in the hurdles in 8.43, qualifying for states.

Patrick Kaffour took first in the dash with a 6.76. I think this is his best for the season. Yousseff al-Korchi and Andrew O'Hagan ran 2-3 in the 300 *and* 1-2 in the high jump, *and* came back for the 4x4.

Brooks Remy and Cary Potochnik went 2-3 against LS in the 600. Connor O'Brien ran tough in the 1000m, tacking 2nd. Alex Karys and Brandon Caldwell took 2-3 in the shot. Jeff Alkins took 2nd in the long jump.

The points added up in our favor for the guys, and there was a huge amount of cheering for the boys 4x4 as it wasn't clear that the meet was already decided at that point. Youssef, Brook, Andrew and Marini ran a 3:33.11, but got DQ'ed. I don't know the precise violation, but I think in one of the handoffs, the incoming runner didn't get off the track in time, impeding the LS runner. That's what it *looked* like to me. In any case, they ran a spectacular relay, DQ notwithstanding, adding to the excitement of the meet.

D1 report

With the LS/NS dual meet on Monday, we ran only a few teams. One of the goals was to get qualifying times for States in the girls 4x8 (yes), boys 4x2 (yes) and girls 4x2 (yes), and to get in a good time for the sprint medley, which is a possible race for Nationals at the Armory.

Full results can be found at:

http://www.mstca.org/Winter_Season/Entries/ResultsDivIRelays.htm

NS and NN had a huge duel in the sprint medley relay. Kathy opened up with a 1:39 600m split, which the announcer said is the 6th fastest 600m this year in Massachusetts. Her 800 was 2:14. NS held the lead up until the last leg, where North had a super strong anchor. North won in 4:15 and South took 2nd in 4:16. It was an impressive race on both sides. I should point out that there were also two freshmen running for South in that race.

The announcer said that the NS time was the 10th fastest SMR in the country and NN's was the 6th fastest.

NN boys won their SMR in a 3:35, which the announcer said was the fastest in the country. Unfortunately I didn't get their splits. AB's leadoff split a 1:57.7 to give them a good start, but their lead got whittled down and North's anchor ran a superb leg for the win.

In the 4x2, Mary Testa, Lizzie Fineman, Char Huth, and Madeline Frieze teamed up to run a 1:54.4 (by my watch) with everyone under 30 and clean handoffs. Again, two freshmen on this one. State qualifying time is 1:57.24, so it looks like they made States.

Youssef El Korchi, Marini Lopci, Patrick Kuffour and Jeff Alkins ran in the boys 4x2, in 1:35.28 (my watch), all splitting in the 23-24 zone. This also qualifies for States (qual. time is 1:39.24). Jeff held off a late closing Chelmsford anchor to win the heat and take 6th overall.

The funny 0.24's in the qualifying times have to do with conversion from hand to FAT time, in case you're curious where on Earth that came from. My own modest contribution was to help them figure out the handoffs at yesterday's practice, which was totally fun for me!

If you're curious about State qualifying standards, check here, but you have to scroll down quite a bit.

Qualifying marks for the DCL Championship meet is equivalent to the qualifying standard for the D4 states.

There were some great performances by Andover, North and AB. Lowell edged North in the 4x2, winning in 1:32.02

If anyone wants their relay splits e-mail me: huth (at) physics (dot) harvard (dot) edu .

I generally don't post splits unless it's something like Kathy's, or if everyone PR's at the same time (rare, but it has happened).

D1 Relays preview

South's bringing a smaller squad than normal because of the LS-NS dual matchup on Monday. Newton North is bringing a very strong squad. I have both the NS and NN entries below. Here are my observations on the seeds and teams.

LS is only entered in the high jump relay - presumably because they're saving up for the dual meet on Monday with NS.

Girls

Andover, as usual, is bringing a very strong squad. They have the top seeds on a lot of relays. In the girls 4x50m shuttle, NN and Andover are the top seeds, and NN has a good shot at knocking off Andover. The same is true of 4x50m shuttle hurdle. Andover has the top seed in the girls 4x200.

The sprint medley relay (800-200-200-400) is totally loaded and should be a great one to watch. South and Andover have the top seed in 4:12, with North seeded 3rd in 4:14, Boston Latin is bringing a very strong squad, along with Acton-Boxboro. The SMR is a tough one to seed because it's rarely competed and none of the legs are competed as part of the indoor duals, so the seeding is a huge guessing game for the coaches. Anything could happen. Weymouth also has a strong squad - If you want to see a competitive relay - this is the one to watch.

Weymouth loaded up their girls DMR and has probably the strongest squad there by far. Like the SMR, the DMR is tough to seed, because of the distances and the 1200 leg (1200-400-800-1600)

North has a shot at winning the girls HJ relay and could take the LJ relay. North has *both* an A and B squad in the LJ relay.

Franklin, Haverhill, Weymouth and Wachusett all have nearly identical seed times in the 4x8, so it should be close.

In the high jump relay, North has 3 girls all seeded at 5.00 - they could take it.

North is bringing two squads to the long jump relay and are definitely capable of taking this as well.

North is the top seed in the 4x4

Boys

Andover also has the top seed in the boys 4x50m dash and hurdle, along with the 4x8. The NN boys have the top seed in the 4x200 and in the SMR.

In the 4x200, NN will get strong competition from Lawrence and Brockton. I'm a bit surprised that New Bedford isn't seeded higher. The 4x200 is a bit of a guessing game as well, since it's rarely competed. Handoffs and DQ's can be a *major* issue in the 4x2 - real roller derby stuff.

Like the girls SMR, the boys will also be very competitive. Acton-Boxboro is bringing a very strong squad, as is Andover and Sommerville. Again, the guessing game in seeding makes it hard to predict.

The boys long jump should be a lock for New Bedford, with three of the top 10 seeds.

North has A and B squads on the boys shot and look like they could take this as well.

Below are all the entries and seed for NS and NN, along with order of events.

Advice to a first time 4x2 runner at Reggie D1 relays

Advice to a first time 4x200m runner at the D1 relays

First, congratulations – you are about to experience one of the most chaotic and wild rides of your life. A 4x200 at Reggie in a crowded environment is bewildering and can be confusing.

Here’s how it goes down:

1.) Some of the officials are exceedingly strict. They’re paid to officiate and that’s what they do. There have been D1 relays where they’ll disqualify teams for what seems like the slightest infraction. So, worry about jewelry, under armor and uniforms. No jewelry, wristwatches, hair beads, earrings or rings. If two or more runners wear under armor – the must be identical. Even if an official inside the gym says it’s OK, the official on the track will DQ you anyway. The uniforms have to be identical. If the little Nike label has been washed off on one person’s uniform, everyone has to put a piece of tape over that spot on all the uniforms. I know, it sounds crazy, but people have been DQ’ed for all of these things. Check your uniforms the day before the race and if you’re going to wear under-armor, compare your plans and make dead-certain they’re identical. My advice is to just skip under-armor – it’s like a red cape waved in the face of a bull (official).

2.) Don’t miss the call!! Reggie is very loud – stay close to your teammates and listen for everything that goes over the loudspeaker. It’s easy to miss the call for the relay. Bring your stuff to the gym, but then be ready to wait. Again, stay together.

3.) Remember your heat number when you check in. Make sure your numbers are on and the hip number for the anchor is on so that the camera can view it at the finish. They’ll call for your heat and then you line up in the order you run. Leadoff in front, #2 behind them, #3 behind them, anchor last. Leadoff and number 2 runner, remember your lane assignment!! Have your spikes on (yes you’ll have to walk funny out of the gym). The officials will peel off the number one runners and send them off, and then the number 2, then 3, then anchor. All the leadoffs, then all the #2’s etc will be led to the narrow corridor next to the track with the fence on the other side. You’ll idle there and watch other races go by. Parents and teammates will tell you to “kick-ass”, but you’ll be nervous and bewildered and make small talk with the runners from other teams next to you.

4.) OK, you’re the next race on the track. After the first handoff and the runners break from the race before yours, the leadoffs will be led to the outside rail of the turn and the official will try to point out the starting line for you. Remember the color and location in your lane of the start line.

5.) As soon as the previous race is over, they’ll tell the leadoffs to get to their lanes. The officials will rush the number two runners to the start of their exchange zones. This is a red colored triangle that’s pointing in the direction you’re running. Take a close look for the triangle that’s the end of the exchange zone 20 meters down the track. Make a note of the halfway point between the triangles. Remember to stay inside these two triangles. I can’t for the life of me understand what’s so difficult about this concept, but there you go.

6.) Number 3 and 4 runners then have to line up along the plastic outside railing led by a big official with glasses and grey hair. He’ll eyeball you to see if you have any jewelry on.

7.) While #3 and #4 are lining up against the rail, you’ll probably hear the gun go off, and the official will still be talking to you. Since the first three turns are in lanes, when the leadoff comes around, the official will tell you to scrunch back against the plastic railing to let the leadoff in lane #6 get by.

8.) Handoffs – here’s where it gets really interesting. The outgoing runner has to judge when to start. Ideally, the exchange should happen just before the mid-point of the zone. The outgoing runner’s responsibility is to keep that receiving hand absolutely still and a target for the incoming runner. It’s the incoming runner’s responsibility to hit that target. You don’t want the outgoing runner to fumble around to grab the baton while the incoming runner is trying to find the mark. That’s like waking up in the middle of the night and trying to find the light switch, but the light switch decides to move around on you. Outgoing runner – just make a good steady target. If the outgoing runner gets to the midpoint and doesn’t have the baton in hand, tap gently on the brakes, so you don’t have to come to a full stop at the end of the zone. This gives you a chance to complete the pass and make up for small errors without a catastrophic DQ or coming to a dead stop.

9.) OK, you have the baton – now it’s showtime. The leadoffs have to stay in their lane until all the runners go by, and then get off the track quickly. The runner who has the baton should accelerate rapidly and then on the break to the pole, run a straight line toward the far turn. Remember you need one and a half strides on another runner to cut in. Sometimes you might have to dart just a bit more quickly to the inside to hold the rail, but don’t do this at the expense of a DQ. There’s an official with a flag who’ll be watching this cut in like a hawk at that turn.

8.) OK, now number 3 – this is the first exchange out of lane. There’s a red line and a red triangle on the inside lane 10 meters behind the start finish line. The order of runners coming off the last curve determines the order of runners in the line-up at the exchange zone. You stay inside the triangle and red line. Remember that the start-finish line is the halfway point of the exchange zone. If a runner gets the exchange ahead of you, you advance to the rail if there’s time. Sometimes the incoming runner will break wide to reach you. You have to use some judgment about advancing toward the inside lane. Wave at them, and make sure they see where you are. At some point you commit and go into your crouch to take off. As before, the number 3 runner has to present a stable target for the incoming runner, and the incoming runner has the responsibility of getting it into their hand. Yelling “slow down” isn’t crazy if the outgoing runner takes off too soon. Again, if the exchange doesn’t happen by the start-finish line, the outgoing runner should gently tap on the brakes.

9.) Once the exchange happens, the #2 runner should quickly step off the track to avoid collisions – quickly glance back and don’t act as an obstacle for another runner, especially if the exchange is happening in an outside lane. The # 3 runner should put on a burst of speed once he/she has the baton and go for the inside lane to establish position. If #3 ends up behind someone, toward the end of the first turn, drift to his or her outside shoulder at the end of the turn, and then use the backstretch to take them. Be aggressive on the backstretch and get a good position for the next turn. Us the last turn as a slingshot to propel you into the final straight.

10.) Anchor – much the same advice goes for the anchor as the number 3 runner. The main thing is that it’s up to you to bring it home. Again, the backstretch is your biggest asset to pass people – or hold off a challenge.

11.) If you’re holding the inside lane coming off the last curve toward the finish, hug the inside lane, don’t run wide, as this can force another runner wide and you can get DQ’ed.

12.) Run ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE FINISH – too many people let up and get caught at the end. Pretend that the actual finish is maybe five meters past the finish line, even if you’re in the lead. You can get surprised if you don’t.

13.) Runners 1,2,3 – don’t yell at your teammates from the inside of the track – this can result in a DQ.

14.) Above all – the official, the noise, the crowd, the whole dance can be distracting. Remember to focus and execute the handoffs with a clear head, and then race hard and smart, don’t let other runners intimidate you.

15.) When it’s all over, give your teammates a big hug, no matter what went down! You’re now part of the Reggie veterans!

There is always good bonding relationships made in the pentathlon event!
And that was truly the case with the Newton South Boys at the Team Pentathlon Meet
held at the Reggie Lewis Center on Dec.29. Team Co-Captains David Melly and Jeffrey Alkins
along with Jung Park, Andrew O'Hagan, and Brandon Caldwell all contributed their best efforts
in their single event to a 4th place team pentathlon victory. These guys were willing to make
sacrifices by trading events with each other if it came down to it to get their team the best results.
At this meet, It was a memorable moment to watch while they awaited for the final teams' results.
A camaraderie of a stronger team bond was clearly witnessed with their reminiscing laughter about their
