Note from coach Norton:

Remembering episodes from an old TV show Kung Fu, "Patience Grasshopper your time will come". For the past 8 weeks, the Boys of the Newton South XC team participated in weekly practices that were mentally and physically challenging for them. They developed new strengths and conditioning as they performed in meets while still exhausted from previous workouts. They learn to push a little more when they mentally feel that they've got nothing left. With every practice day and in the meets they competed in, gave them a new level of threshold that they were unaware of. "I want to be my best!", "I feel stronger now, and I know I can run with the 'A' group!", "I believe I can take 30 seconds off my time!".

In this sport of Cross Country running it takes a little patience to see great progress. This season our young developing team have been patient long enough, and they are now mentally and physically ready to reach new peaks in their performance as individuals and as a viable team player on the NSXC team.
"When you can take this stone out of my hand...then you will be ready".
They've taken that stupid stone from my hand and thrown it across the pond and I can't find it!!!
These little grasshoppers...I mean XC runners, are ready!

NSHS vs Acton-Boxborough vs Arlington Results

From Steven:

Below are the resutls of the Arlington, AB and NS meet on 20 Oct. 2010.

The course record is extremely fast as late in the season in 2008 I let Bridget Dahlberg and Kelsey Kary push each other to work to set a course record that could hold up for a while.

In the early 2000's Emily Johnson NS (5:01 mile / 2 Mile All State champ. 8th at Nationals, 10:48 2mile PR, 18:11 PR and All State runner up in XC) had set the standard to 15:48 and back then I did not invision that the record would fall anytime soon as that was so fast.

So Kathy running a solo effort in 15:46 is a pretty speical race. But the entire race was fast. The Acton - Boxboro and Arlington girls provided us and each other with great competition and girls from all of the teams raced to great times. Ten girls under 18 minutes and16 under 19:00 is a very good day on this course.

Last year in our last home meet of the season Anna Laurence ran 17:15 in a break through race. She set a PR on this course of 25 seconds and that shows a lot of improvement. The great thing is that she had company the entire way with teammate Anna Rhatigan making a huge breakthrough. Emily was not far behind and ran the time that Anna L ran last which is also a big improvement. Hannah Friedman closed our 1 - 5 gap down to 2:00 and Sarina Weiss was not far back. When you consider how fast Kathy is running that puts us in pretty good shape for the championship meets.

Sarina Weiss, Leda Olia, Zuzana Skvarkova and Clarissa Ren all also ran PR races.

This is one of the very rare races in which all 9 of our varsity girls set PRs on the same day.

Our JV girls team finished the season undefeated. Scoring 15-49 vs Arlington and 15 - 50 against AB. We also had 6 - 9th grade girls under 20:00 for this course (actually under 19:48) to make this the deepest 9th grade class in our history and also the largest with 14 - 9th grade girls.

I have told the kids that because of their dedication, passion and their great racing all season that I consider our JV team to be our 2nd varsity team. This is a great bunch of girls and all of them truly give a lot to the sport and to our team.

Varsity Record: 7-2 JV Record 9 - 0

This team has come a very long ways in such a short time and we look forward to the championship meets. Kathy is the only senior in our top 9 so the future holds a lot of promise for this young team.

NSHS vs Acton-Boxboro vs Arlington, 4 p.m. Cold Spring Park, Newton

from Coach Norton:

The stage is set.

The 2.8 mile cross country course is marked, free of downed trees, and water pond floods.
The grass in the fields are cut at a low and even height, painted arrows along the trails and small mini flags near each turn with clearly visible parallel lines to mark the finish. The local Newton dogs are on their leashes and are paw-ready to give a cheering howl to their Newton South XC Boys as they compete against Acton-Boxboro and Arlington at 4:00pm in Cold Spring Park Newton.

Course:
Start on the edge of the soccer field. Take 1 loop around the field and then they proceed through the woods and across the dog park ( 1 Mile), then come out of the woods at the soccer fields and will proceed back into the woods for a 2nd loop and will approach the Mile 2 near the entrance of the dog park. As they run across the dog park a second time (bearing not to slip on any dog poop), they will be approaching the finish when they exit the woods and sprint about 50 yards to the finish line which will be in the middle of the soccer fields.

You are expected to see a great XC race today on this legendary NS home XC course.
The course is pretty flat and fast, but narrow areas where good cross country racing strategies will become useful. Today we are also hoping for new course records to be challenged by our top Boy and Girl Senior competitors Kathy O'Keefe and David Melly as well as great performances from both Boys and Girls Varsity and JV teams.

Beat the Clock---Win the meet!

Hope to see you there,
Coach Norton

From Coach Norton:
"Like the Baystate Invitational a few weeks ago, this meet is a great spectator-friendly meet with about 26 teams competing in the varsity race. This meet is just a bit more competitive as this event includes a few select larger private Schools, and some of the local Div.I large Schools. This will give our kids a little more competitive experience as they prepare for our next full team DCL meet this Wednesday at Cold Springs.
So...Come on down! bring a friend, the rest of your kids,...and watch our Boys (I mean your Boys) make tremendous efforts towards accomplishing their goals for their team."

From John about the girls race:
"Kathy (O'Keefe NS) ran alone way up front and possibly set a course record of 16:22.  Andrea (Keklak LS) paced the L-S pack to pull along the L-S 3, 4 and 5, so there wasn't (unfortunately) a race with Kathy.  However they posed for a nice photo afterward.  I'm sure there will be a race at DCL's."

Andrea won the MIAA Eastern MA Cross Country Championship last year with Kathy 3rd.
Andrea also won the 2009 MIAA All State Meet last year with Kathy 6th.
I'll be there for the DCL championship at LS and then at Franklin Park for the Eastern MA championships to see this rivalry continue.
Here are the results from the NS v LS meet from 2008 won by Andrea in 16:16. There were 9 girls under 17:00. see:
