NS 75   Waltham  69

This was two squads with a lot of youth having a great track meet.   51 of our girls on our 62 girl roster are in 9th or 10th grade.  Waltham also has some key 9th graders added this season.

Waltham showed up today very focused and determined and it showed  as they won 8 events today as Newton South won 9.   Last week we were able to win 9 events vs Lincoln-Sudbury to their 8 events but their depth won the day as they swept us in 3 events and went 1-2 in a few others.

Today both teams showed depth in certain events as Waltham won the 100, 200, 400, 100 Hurdles and 800 against our kids that are state qualified athletes in those events.  We are good in all of those events and they were just a bit better today.  We in turn dominated the distance events going 1,2 in the mile and 2 mile, won the 400 Hurdles and won 5 of the 7 field events.  We split the relays.  So it was a back and forth meet all day long.

I did chose to hold Kyra Visnick and Mary Testa out of a 2nd running event as they both competed in 4 events last week and we did not want to do that back to back so we could have gained some more points in each dash or could have gone for the 4 x 100 relay win as Waltham had used their best sprinter in both the 100 and 200 and our time last week was faster than what they posted today by a second.  So we did have a few points that we could have gained by going one more event each with our top two sprint athletes.  I choose to run our team that will compete in the 228 frosh/soph meet in the 4 x 100 to give our youth experience and they held their own.

My hat is off to Waltham as they always compete so well when we face them.  They looked like a team that wanted to win this one and I saw great effort from their girls.
I felt that our team looked like that last week, but that we were a little flat this week.  At the varsity level we had some kids set season bests today, but we set many more last week.  So we are still learning how to be consistant.  That will come.

Highlights:

Alekhya Chaparala ran a state qualifying mark in the 400 hurdles in her first race ever in that event.   Mary Testa set a PR in the long jump.  Anna Laurence ran a wonderful doulble in the mile and 2 mile and actually ran her 2 mile faster than last week when she was fresh.  Kathleen Garrity set a best in the 100 hurdles.  Jina An set a PR in winning the discus.
Our 4 x 400 team of Lizzie Fineman, Hannah Friedman, Anna Rhatigan and Alekhya Chaparala dropped their time by 9 seconds in winning.

Sophia Cen set a PR and placed 3rd in the 400.  Anna Alsop was a needed 2nd place in the shot put.  9th Grader Anna Mason took 3rd in the 100 hurdles in her 1st high school race.

Thanks,
Steven
