NS v WA v BL @ Westford Academy

Newton South girls pulled off the win against Westford Academy 83 - 62 on a day which kept George the Toad burrowed away. Sorry, no pictures.
NS also beat Boston Latin by a fairly large score. Boston Latin has some very fast runners but not the depth of NS. Westford is always a challenge.
Happy birthday to BL which celebrated 375 years on 23 April as the oldest public school in the country. (That's 1635, oh my!) (My dad went there in 1929.)
Mary Kate Cronin got her 1st double victory in the 100 high hurdles into a strong headwind in 17.7. Wish I were there to watch. MK seems to relish every race like no one else.
Andrea Braver moved down to the 100 meters and qualified for states in 13.1 behind Katie Sandson in 13.0 (headwind again).
Kayla Jackson continues undefeated in DCL meets with the shot put in 33' - 8". She also won the jav.
Avery Forrow moved to the pole vault and state qualified in 8' - 0" winning.
Nicole Kesterberg high jumped 4'-10" winning.
Anna Laurence qualified for states in the 2 mile winning.
Hannah Friedman ran 3rd in the 800 meters in 2:37.
Madeline Frieze took 3rd in the 200 meters in 28.9.
(I'm reporting this meet just a little differently.)
Results will be posted tomorrow.

The Daily News Tribune reports that NS boys beat Westford 84 - 52 and Boston Latin 119 - 11

NS v WA v BL Wednesday 4 p.m. @ Westford Academy

The Grey Ghosts of Westford host the next DCL dual meet for Newton South. It is a double dual meet: Newton South v Westford Academy v Boston Latin.
On the girls side we'll get to see the very fast sprinters of Boston Latin.
I know there are many good young distance runners for Westford but since they don't yet post many results on Athletic.net it's hard to give a preview.
Get it together coaches. Post the results on Athletic.net. It's free. Runners, parents and fans want it and it'll help the program.
please signup: Bedford, Concord-Carlisle, Arlington, Tyngsboro
please post results: Westford, Boston Latin,

The other meets today:
Acton-Boxborough and Concord-Carlisle run at Weston.

From the Cornell website “Thursday night provided great conditions for the distance events, and the Big Red had a number of standout performances….In the women's 3000, freshmen Kelsey Karys and Genna Hartung both ran well to easily better the ECAC standard, with Karys breaking the freshman record of Laura Woeller '95 to place fourth in 9:43.34 and Hartung finishing 10th overall in a personal best 9:48.60.”

From the Indiana University Pennsylvania website:
Maddy Outman Easily Outdistances Field to Claim Heptathlon Title at Penn Relays April 21, 2010

Maddy Outman broke the school record in the heptathlon, qualified for two events at the NCAA outdoor track and field meet and became the first IUP athlete to win a Championship of America event at the Penn Relays Wednesday in Philadelphia.
Outman finished with a total of 5,182 points to break her own school mark in the seven-event heptathlon by over 200 points. She automatically qualified for nationals in the heptathlon while also earning a provisional qualifying time in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.65.
In addition to finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field in the 800, Outman also placed first in the 200 meters (25.48), 100 meter hurdles (14.12), high jump (5 feet, 2 ¼ inches) and long jump (18-1). She began her march to the title with a 100 hurdles time that was more than a second faster than anyone else.
Outman established new personal bests in the other two events, throwing the shot put 32-5 ¾ and the javelin 107-3.

NS v AB dual meet at AB

I heard it was a great meet.
According to rumor with no details yet:
NS girls win
NS boys lose close

Hopefully, more results will be posted at athletic.net

Story by David Melly:
The Newton South girls defeated Acton-Boxboro today, falling just short of victory on the boys' side in one of the crucial early meets of the season. Going into the last three events of the meet, the boys needed to sweep pole vault and both relays to win. Things were looking good for South as it won a dramatic boys' 4x100 relay, but AB took the 4x400 relay for the win.
On a surprisingly hot morning, the meet started off on a good note, with Luke Voss-Kernon qualifying for states in the 400 hurdles, and Lauren Gabriel was one-tenth of a second away in her race. Freshman Ben Eisenberg, who also took third in the pole vault at 11 feet, showed promise in the 400 hurdle race, dropping 3 seconds off his previous time.
The story of the day in the distance meet was the impressive doubles. Mel Fineman won the 800m in 2:20, then she came back to win the 2 mile in a dominating 11:25. Kathy O'Keefe actually tripled, winning the mile in 5:13 and the discus, a new event for her. On the guys' side, Xhulio Uruci ran a tough 4:37/10:19 mile-2 mile double, and Yuji Wakimoto ran an 800 in 2:01 and anchored the 4x4.
The 100-meter dashes were both declared ties, with Ray Park and Ezra Banks tying with their respective A-B counterparts. This raises the problem that these meets face especially in the shorter events, where lack of FAT timing causes the sprint events to suffer.
Having a meet over vacation was difficult, as many of the athletes, notably the throwers, were not able to attend. A-B and Newton South traded off event wins for the most part; crucial points coming in close second- and third- place contests.

NS v CC v Waltham @ CC

cool meet.... I mean hot meet.
The meet is called a double dual meet for those unfamiliar with track & field scoring. The teams run together but are are scored as separate dual meets. NS v CC, NS v Waltham, CC v Waltham. Each team competes in two dual meets, not a tri-meet which is scored together.
Newton South won all meets but I don't have the final scores. The pole vault was not contested on Wednesday because the pit was determined not to be safe.
The vault has now been held but I don't have complete results.
Ross MacDonald jumped 14'-0", frosh Ben Eisenberg 11'-6".
Cora Visnick 10'-3", frosh Kyra Visnick 8'-0", Katie Sandson 7'-0 ".
