Outdoor season has started

The outdoor season has started. Some of the NS runners who raced right up to the start of the outdoor season are getting some time off but for everyone else spring is here. I'll try to get some photos from practice and put up the schedule.

Reporting by John Huth:
The girls 4x8 took second in 8:58.63. I thought a couple of weeks ago that a sub-9 4x8 was only a dream. Juliet ran a really hard leadoff, handing off to Kathy in maybe about 3rd position. Kathy really blasted it open with a 2:13, Mel hung in there in front - We had her in 2:17.9 or 2:18. But at this point, Southern Regional had a 2:08 leg, and was close behind, and Jillian Smith got the baton, and blasted a 2:06. Bridget tried to give chase, but Smith seems to have a gear that no mortals possess. I had Bridget in 2:13.
I couldn't believe my eyes - what a race.

Southern Regional's 8:54 is just a shade off the national record, and Newton South's time is a number 3 all time in the US and is a new New England record. Every girl PR'ed in both relays, twice - which is unheard of. Also the old meet record was 9:04 - absolutely demolished by Newton South and Southern Regional. Lincoln Sudbury ran a 9:07 which would've been a New England record only two weeks ago.

In fact, the whole weekend was absolutely crazy, with records dropping like flies left and right.
Albemarle Virginia's 4x8 relay is a national record - 7:36.99. 16 year old Luke Verzbicas ran a 8:57.44 2-mile for a new Freshman Record.

In other results - Yong Cho made the semi's in the hurdles, and ran well. Kelsey ran a great 2 mile, taking 7th in a race dominated by California's Jordan Hasay, who won in a 10:10.
Steven M. was in hog heaven watching from the sidelines. I spoke with the press for Newton Centre Athletics - so if you see me quoted, that's why. Steven, you get em back tomorrow with the start of the outdoor season.

Nike Nationals reporting by John Huth

Story by John Huth:

The girls won the 4xmile today at the Nike Indoor Nationals.
Kelsey ran leadoff and ran in second place until the half-mile mark, and then put on a burst of speed to get a lead, and the team was never challenged after that. The winning time of 20:25.90 is something like the fifth all time 4xmile in the country ever!
Splits were something like Kelsey 5:08, Kathy 5:03, Melanie 5:06.6, Bridget 5:05. It's kind of hard to do the splits in a 4xmile because the handoff zone creeps forward (remember that a mile is 1609 meters and a bit).

You can catch a photo of them posing with the boys 4xmile winning team of West Windsor Plainsboro at this URL
http://www.dyestat.com//?pg=us-2009-Indoor-Track-NIN-Saturday
The boys 4xmile team set a new high school record. Also Luke Verzbicas from Illinios ran a new high school record in the 5000 last night of 14:18.42. Luke is 16 years old and is a triathalete.

The girls 4x200m relay had a huge PR, running a 1:45.62, which would be a new school record. The handoffs were smooth and each girl ran great. I had splits of 27.16 for Andrea, 25.5 for Dani, 26.7 for Katie and 25.96 for Pebbles. That doesn't quite add up to 1:45.62, but that's the difference between my hand timing and fully automatic. This was good for 12th overall!!!

Ross McDonald was 2nd in the unseeded section of the pole vault competition - clearing 14'-8.25". This placed him 12th overall.
Click here for youtube of Ross at 14' - 8.25"

Tomorrow, Sasha is running in the 800, and we have Sasha, Will, Xhulio and Yuji in the boys 4x8, along with Yong in the hurdles.

Nalis throws the shot, and we have the girls 4x800m relay. They go up against Lincoln-Sudbury and also Southern Regional High School. Southern Regional is running as "Hammer Track Club" and features Jillian Smith, who is very accomplished miler.
I found parking lots further down Columbus Ave, so you can drive in and park reasonably close by.

Go Lions...er... Newton Centre Athletics.

NEPVC Pole Vault Meet

On March 7, Ross McDonald cleared 15 feet 3 inches at an NEPVC Invitational Pole Vault Meet. This USATF-sanctioned meet was held at the field house at South and was contested by six of the top high school pole vaulters in New England. With this jump, Ross placed first in the competition and also set a new PR. The 15-03 vault exceeds the All-State Meet record, which is 14-06. Ross’s jump can be seen on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5gAcnz0Xjo Ross will compete in Nike Indoor Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday, March 14.
