The Newton South girls pulled off the win today ahead of Lincoln-Sudbury. South had three individual winners, Nalis in the shot, Kelsey in the 2 mile and Bridget in the mile.
The Newton South boys finished 9th with 17 points.
Also, congratulations to boys winner B.C. High.
The girls 1 mile was very interesting. Bridget went out in the the back of the pack and didn't make a move until after the 1/2 mile. And, wow, what a move. Only Keklak was able to stay with her for a while. Bridget then made a big gap which held until the end.

Nalis just missed 40'.

Taking photos of races is most exciting in close races. That makes the girls 2 mile not so exciting. This photo is only a couple of laps into the race. Kelsey came through the 1 mile in around 5:16.

The Div 1 state meet at Reggie Lewis Track starts at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday 21 Feb.
The Newton South girls team is a close favorite but anything can happen. From the top seeds, 61 points.
Banks 55m; 8
O'Keefe 1000m, 6
Dahlberg 1M, 10
Fineman 1M, 4
Karys 2M, 10
Mbianda SP, 10
4x200m, 6
4x800m, 6
4x400m, 1

The boys team should also score quite a few points. They are seeded at 19 points.
Cho HH 8
Long 1000m; 2
Wakimoto 1M; 1
McDonald LJ; 8

On the girls side the 1000m run could be the most exciting. Any times under 3:00 are outstanding. In this race there are 9 runners under 3:01! From Newton South, Kathy O'Keefe 2:58:07; from Newton North, Carolyn Ranti 2:58:16 and Margo Gillis 2:59.50. They are the 3rd, 4th and 5th seeds.

For those not up on the scoring, in each event, 1st place 10 points, then 8,6,4,2,1.

Newton South pulled off victories for both girls and boys at the DCL championship today at Reggie Lewis. LS took a close 2nd for the girls and Westford Academy a close 2nd for the boys.
A few highlights that I saw, Yong ran 7.63 in 55HH. Bridget ran 4:59 mile, Ross 21'-3" LJ, Yong 2nd in 20'-11", Ezra Banks 7.36 in 55, Juliet 1:40.97 in 600m, Ben Olins 1:27.07 in 600m, John M. was DQ'd in 600m. I saw a Wayland runner cut in too early on John but the Wayland runner went down and John DQ'd. See the photo. Melanie 2nd in thousand in 3:01, Sasha 2:36 in 1000m, Kelsey 11:05 2M and 5:10 1M, Nalis 39'-4" and Ezra 2nd 30'-6" in SP, winning relays: girls 4x200 and 4x800, boys 4x800
This is the 1st time in a while I got a picture of Yong. He just moves too fast. Yong scored 22 points, Ezra 18 and relay?

NS v WA v BL 6 Feb. 2009

The last dual meet of the indoor season was today.
The girls remained undefeated easily beating Westford Academy and Boston Latin.
The boys were favored against Westford Academy even missing quite a few runners but the stars aligned for Westford. The meet came down to the 4x400 and on the last leg with Yugi Wakimoto running in lane 2 at the end of the final straightaway holding off a fantastic last leg by the Westford runner, he was disqualified for veering in front of the Westford runner by "running all the way into the 4th lane" (official who called the foul). There was no contact. The Westford runner fell making one last lunge at the finish. See photos. The final score was WA 48 NS 47. The 1st loss for NS.
