We had an All State meet that the kids could be proud of. Freshman Rebecca Grusby ran a sensational mile to place 4th in a personal record by 5 seconds in 5:04.48. That is an outstanding time and place for a high school girl of any age and according to Milesplit leads the nation among 9th graders. What makes this race so special was how much poise she showed in the face of a very fast early pace. This was the fasest girls mile race in the history of the All State meet with Catirina Rocha of Peabody besting her own meet record in 4:49.14 and two more girls under 4:59. Those three went out well below 5:00 pace and Rebecca ran a well measured race and was able to kick into 4th with about 500 meters to go. She ran a 35 last 200 which is a tremendous finish. Rebecca came back to run a PR split on our 4 x 800 in 2:23.65 and that was our fastest leg. She had 7 seconds worth of PRs in those two races. What I love about this girl is that she takes big meets in stride and preforms well on the big stage. She has a great attitude about what races are about that allows her to relax enough to follow her plan.
Our 4 x 800 of Alekhya Chaparala, Rebecca Grusby, Lucrecia Aguilar and Lizzy Fineman ran a very solid race to place 8th in 9:48.01. I am proud of this group as all of them have had to make a come back this season. Had we run this time last week the girls would have been very satisfied. This is our 2nd fastest time of the year and it has earned the girls a trip to the New England championship as two teams ahead of us did not declare and teams can advance if they finish in the top 8 of the All State meet. We plan to allow Anna Rhatigan who has been one of our fastest legs a chance to race at New Englands as she has come back from illness and was our alternate at All State.
On the college front here are some efforts very worthy of reporting.
Newton South Alumni:
Middlebury senior Juliet Ryan-Davis won the 800 at the New England Division III Championship held at Southern Maine on Feb. 16th. Her time of 2:11.36 breaks her own school indoor 800 record. Found on Middlebury site.
Boston College junior (redshirted an indoor season) Bridget Dalhberg ran a fantastic 5000 and 3000 meter double at the ACC championship this past weekend at Virginia Tech. On Friday Bridget ran a PR of 16:20.64 to place 4th. That time puts her 3rd on the Boston College all time list in the 5000. She doubled back and placed 4th again with a 3000 meter PR of 9:26.69. Her 10 points from those two events was a team high in the meet.
Boston College sophomore Kathy O' Keefe ran the lead off 1200 meter leg of the distance medley team that placed 3rd and earned All ACC honors in a team time of 11:31.13. Kathy is very familar with that leg of the DMR as she twice was an All American while at Newton South running the same 1200 lead off leg.
Both can be found on the B.C. college website along with Bridget's 4:47 mile PR.
