Report: girl's team by Steven McChesney

Going into the meet against Lincoln-Sudbury today I felt that our kids had an honest chance to win if things went well for us. We issued brand new varsity uniforms yesterday and you could feel the excitement.  I guess our kids wanted to give the new uniforms a great debut as we exceeded all of my expectations as a team today.

Lincoln-Sudbury is a team that has dominated in the DC and we have had some super dual meets against them in the past with some of our great teams, but it has been a few seasons since we have been able to get past them.

We have 34 9th graders out for the spring and 82 girls on our team which is the largest team that I can remember.  With those enlarged numbers also comes some talent that really adds to our depth and the enthusiasm of the entire team is uplifting. There is also a new level of team confidence which is a real boost.  I felt coming into this season that our team is a much deeper and better balanced team than in the recent past.

We had a virtual explosion of great efforts to secure a 81- 55 lead with pole vault to be contested tomorrow.  Kyra Visnick, who placed 3rd in All State last year in the vault, will jump and there are no LS girls entered so the likely score will settle at 86 - 55.

This is a very significant win for our team as a reward for our older kids and a pathway to success for a lot of younger kids with talent.  LS is traditionally one of the very top teams in the state and this does a great deal for team confidence.

We dominated on the track scoring 56 points to 26 for LS and with the vault could win in the field events as well.

This team really is having fun with growing into a pretty good team.

We placed 1, 2 in the 400 hurdles, 2 mile, 100 hurdles and discus and won 9 of the 16 events contested so far. What I was pleased with is that we stayed close in the events that they won.  They outscored us only by 1 point (5-4) in 4 of the six events that they won and that was huge.  We did not allow them to dominate events while we scored big in others.

Highlights:
We went 1, 2 in both hurdle races, the 2 mile and discus giving us a 32-4 lead in those events.

We won both relays with  Lizzie Walkes 9, Kyra Visnick 12, Anna Mason 10 and Charlotte Huth in the 4 x 100 with a time of 54.1. Alekhya Chaparala 11, Lizzie Fineman 11, Catharine Pierce 9 and Kayla Burton won the 4 x 400 in a time of 4:17.9.

We had freshmen score in 7 events which is very promising.  Lizzie Walkes took 2nd in the 200 in 28.4 and was lead off on the winning 4 x 100.  Rebecca won the 2 mile and placed 2nd in the mile.  Catharine Pierce took 3rd in the 800 and ran the 3rd leg on our winning 4 x 400.  Liza Hochberg took 3rd in the 400 in 67.3.  This is a promising group of 9th graders and there are others not far behind them that will be scoring at the varsity level soon.

Kayla Burton 12 rejoined us to finish her senior year after being an All American as a freshman.  She gave us a boost with a dominate win in the 800 in 2:24.2 and anchored our 4 x 400 with a stellar 61.7 split.

Rebecca Grusby 9 ran a very nice double placing 2nd in the mile in 5:24.6 and winning the two mile in 11:23.9.

Charlotte Huth 11 was a double winner in the 100 and she also ran a blazing anchor on our 4 x 100.  She also took 2nd in the long jump in 14'-1"

Kyra Visnick won the triple jump and pulled away from LS in the 2nd leg on our 4 x 100.

Jonee Harrison won the discus with 80'-11.5" and took 2nd in the shot put in 29'-11".
