waiting for boys report

Here is the girls report from Steven:

@ Westford     Sunny  mid 60s   Low wind   Record  3-1    34 of 41 set season bests

Newton South  74   Westford  71
Newton South  96   Weston  44

Westford and Weston have given us a lot of great meets over the years and this was a great meet.  Weston was short handed, but still had their share of winners and great efforts.  Wesford and our team have had a lot of close battles and I respect both programs a great deal.

When I  found out that Westford beat Lincoln-Sudbury just before the meet I decided to keep that from my team and just let them compete.  Beating a Westford team this balanced was a very meaningful win.

Spring break week is a time that you hope to keep moving forward as some of the team goes off.   I feel that we had a great core of kids at every practice and that we got a lot of work in both in terms of teaching specific events and also in terms of conditioning.  This was a good week of training and our meet made the week very rewarding.
I feel that we took some big steps forward as a team this week.

I was extremely proud of our team attitude and our team effort against Weston and Westford.  I always like to focus on process and I feel that wins and good marks will follow.
With such a young team that is very important to keep in mind this season.  But meaningful wins are still a nice tribute to how much passion these kids have for each other and their sport.

It was hard to get a good idea of just how good Westford was going in as they have not appeared in results on line.  Weston had a good meet vs Acton-Boxboro that I could find and they appeared to be a very solid balanced team.  I let the girls know that either team could give us a good challenge.

On top of that we were about a half dozen varsity kids short due to the break and two of them were event leaders for us.   So my feeling was that we needed a good effort to win both meets.

Weston was short a lot of kids so the meet against them was not what it could have been.  Westford was missing a few kids as well including 1 team event leader so I feel that was slightly in their favor.

Then just prior to the meet the Westford coach told me that they had just come off of a win vs Lincoln-Sudbury which is a great measuring stick as LS is a very good team across the events.  My feeling was that this was going to be a back and forth meet all day and that the relays could decide the final outcome.

I was right in that as the meet was back and forth all day long and indeed winning the relays gave us the victory.

And we did have a great day.  We fielded 41 competitors and we had 24 varstiy season bests and 10 JV season bests.   82% of our team had their best day of the season and all others were very close to their best marks.  Across the board our team was taking care of every event and really sharing their efforts in a way that encouraged better performances in the following events.
It was the kind of day that you hope that kids can enjoy and the win was an extra reward.

I had decided to run our best 4 x 100 team as I felt we had a bit more depth in the 400 meter range and most likely could field a winning 4 x 400 while bringing our best 400 runner Lizzie Fineman down to the 4 x 100.  I felt the combination of Kyra Visnick, Lizzie Fineman, Ester Cho and Mary Testa is very steady and had an excellent chance of winning.
Ester was ill so I pulled her out of the 400 H and just ran her in the relay and that team ran great.

In the 4 x 400 I led off with Hannah Friedman who pulled away from Weston distance ace Abigail Pohl and we had a gap going into Anna Rhatigan's leg.   Sophomore Sophia Cen has really improved in the 400 and she held her own on leg 3 and Alekhya cruised to a 62 + leg.

It always feels good to finish winning the relays as that is a time when the rest of the team is done and they really cheer on their teammates.  They were very spirited cheering on our relay teams.

That worked out well for us as we won the 4 x 100 by almost a second and then pulled away early in the 4 x 400.

Highlights:

Jonee Harrison had a super day with two huge PRs.  She won both the shot and discus in state qualifying marks of 31' and 94'-9".  The throws are a Westford strong point so when I heard early that Jonee had won throwing 31' feet I took that as a good sign.  Anna Alsop is a tough competitor and without our previous event leader in that event she was a stopper in the javelin picking up a point with a PR.  She also scored a point in the shot put and in a meet this close that was huge.

Kyra Visnick was super busy as there were a lot more vaulters than normal and the low heights took a long time.  That made it difficult as she had to rush the entire length of the track to do the pole vault and triple jump at the same time.  She had to run 80 meters from one to the other and back again.  Then she had to go between the vault and 100m.  As soon as she ran her season best in the 100 she had to rush over as the bar was going up in the vault.  Then she ran the 4 x 100 and returned to the vault.  I joked with her that I think she did more running sprinting back and forth between events than she competed in.   She jumped 36+ in the triple,  9'6 in the vault and set a season best in the 100 winning all three events along with the relay.  She handled a very tough situation very well.

Anna Laurence ran a double to insure the win.  She was just off of her season best taking 2nd place in a 1, 2 sweep in the mile with Anna Rhatigan.  I thought both girls ran well in that event and Yasmine Hashemi set a season best to pull of 3rd against both teams.  That gave us a early boost.  Laura Cotter had a nice race finishing just behind Yasmine in a season best 6:08 and Margalit Glasgow was right behind as well.   In the 2 mile Anna ran a very brave race and just missed her season best and Leda Olia took 2nd vs Weston and 3rd against Westford.

Both of our 100 hurdlers Kathleen Garrity and Maggie DiMarco set PRs and went 1-2 vs Weston.

Nicole Kestenberg is finally back from a torn ACL from the state meet last spring jumped a season best 4'-10 in the high jump and Alekhya Chaparala and Kathleen Garrity set their best of 4'-6" and frosh Charlotte Robbins did as well at 4'-4"  That was a nice event for us.  With Alekhya and Charlotte we feel that we have some promising young athletes in this event as Charlotte is in her first season and is having good attempts at 4'-6" already.

Mary Testa ran a season best in the 200 winning vs Westford and Katherin Cullen placed 3rd vs Weston.

Hannah Friedman won the 800 against Westford and Emily Caggiano was 3rd.   Kimberly Ly, Amy Gilbert, Audrey Hooker and Laura Grosser all had PRs in the 800 running JV.

Lizzie Fineman won against both teams and Sophia Cen and Sonya Nair both ran great times as they have really improved.

We are now 3-1 and still in the hunt for the DCL regular season Large School title and the overall DCL title. Next week we will be tested again going against a very good AB team that beat Westford and a Concord-Carlisle team that can win the DCL as well.  That should be a barn burner.
