Story by David Melly:
The Newton South girls defeated Acton-Boxboro today, falling just short of victory on the boys' side in one of the crucial early meets of the season. Going into the last three events of the meet, the boys needed to sweep pole vault and both relays to win. Things were looking good for South as it won a dramatic boys' 4x100 relay, but AB took the 4x400 relay for the win.
On a surprisingly hot morning, the meet started off on a good note, with Luke Voss-Kernon qualifying for states in the 400 hurdles, and Lauren Gabriel was one-tenth of a second away in her race. Freshman Ben Eisenberg, who also took third in the pole vault at 11 feet, showed promise in the 400 hurdle race, dropping 3 seconds off his previous time.
The story of the day in the distance meet was the impressive doubles. Mel Fineman won the 800m in 2:20, then she came back to win the 2 mile in a dominating 11:25. Kathy O'Keefe actually tripled, winning the mile in 5:13 and the discus, a new event for her. On the guys' side, Xhulio Uruci ran a tough 4:37/10:19 mile-2 mile double, and Yuji Wakimoto ran an 800 in 2:01 and anchored the 4x4.
The 100-meter dashes were both declared ties, with Ray Park and Ezra Banks tying with their respective A-B counterparts. This raises the problem that these meets face especially in the shorter events, where lack of FAT timing causes the sprint events to suffer.
Having a meet over vacation was difficult, as many of the athletes, notably the throwers, were not able to attend. A-B and Newton South traded off event wins for the most part; crucial points coming in close second- and third- place contests.
