report from Steven:
Newton South 74 Waltham 26
I have a great respect for Francois and his staff at Waltham. He is a master of getting kids to improve. I know that his team lost a lot to graduation, but today they competed with passion and gave us a good meet. I can also see a number of Waltham girls improving to make their future look promising. I wish to congratulate Francois and the Waltham girls as we always looking forward to a good meet against them.
What a difference a week can make! This was by far our best meet of the season as we had 17 personal records on our varsity team and they came from all areas in the sprints, jumps, throws and relays. We were a bit disappointed in our team performance last week so this week we focused on proccess as opposed to scores and outcome. We got back to basics and really hit this meet with all cylinders firing. I am very proud of how our girls responded today and everyone could feel a special meet coming on and pitched in to make it even better. Good meets have a lighter and happy feel and we were a team that was well pleased event after event and you could feel it as well as see it. As a coach I had more kids come bouncing up to me thrilled with their event and eager to share than I have had all season. I told the kids on the bus that this was the meet that we were looking for and to remember it as we can continue to grow and improve. Having said that this was a meet to pause and savor for a bit before moving on.
I felt that the 300 was a highlight with a Charlotte Huth, Ashley Nhek and Sophia Cen all setting PRs. Charlotte Huth had a very good day setting a PR in the 55 and coming back with another in the 300.
Freshman Caraline Pham ran one of the best races of the day in winning the mile in her first time running it with a brilliant kick and also won the long jump.
Jonee Harrison qualified for state with a PR of 31'11 in the shot put and that is 2 feet better than her previous best of the season.
Emily Caggiano was out sick yesterday and we were not sure that she was going to run today. She did run the two mile and set a strong early pace to place 2nd among all of the girls in the DCL and pulled off the win vs Waltham against a good distance runner.
Anna Rhatigan remains on a great streak of racing and has remained undefeated in winning the 600.
Rebecca Grusby and Lucrecia Aguilar both ran stellar times in the 1000 and Sonya Nair made a great debut in the event to take 3rd. Our times in the 600, 1000 and mile project a very good 4 x 800 relay at the state level.

NS v LS Steven's Report
Steven's report for the NS v LS meet:
Newton South 32 vs Lincoln Sudbury 67
Newton South Now 1-1 in Large School
Next Meet Wed. 1/9/2013 @ Boston University
As a coach I am not fond of saying that the meet was closer than the score indicated. LS won the meet because they are at this time a deeper team and they competed fiercly for every point. They deserved the win.
However after looking at our Newton South results there were plenty of close events and I believe that we are still a team growing towards getting back to the top of the DCL in the future. We only have 4 seniors on our roster and only 1 of them has been scoring at every meet. Our seniors are providing great leadership and kids are learning. So we have depended on our next kids in line to step up and I believe after seeing the number of season and personal bests in this meet that they are starting to do that. We have also been missing our top sprinter and best long jumper in Kyra Visnick and our 2nd most proven long sprinter in Lizzie Fineman. That allows teams to gain points that would have gone our way. Both could return to our line up this Wed. against Waltham. But being short handed against LS creates a very steep hill to climb.
So when I looked at the big picture I was happy with our team in several areas. Ester Cho won the hurdles in 10.13, a PR, and all three of our hurdlers have been improving all season. We went 1, 2 in the Shot with Jonee Harrison and Jina An. Anna Rhatigan made a great mid race surge and pulled away to win the 1000 in dramatic fashion. Rebecca Grusby and Lucrecia ran a very strong mile to take 2nd and 3rd with a PR for Rebecca and a season best for Lucrecia.
Our 4 x 400 of Rhatigan, Chaparala, Nair and Aguilar had the 2nd fastest time in the DCL on the day, but finished a competitive 2nd to LS.
The effort of the day goes to Rebecca Grusby who ran a stellar double in 5:19.79 for the mile and 11:27.15 in the two mile. It is nice to have young kids show that they can have a huge impact on a meet - even against the best of teams. One of the highlights of the day came early before the varsity events started to be score. Louisa Kimmell was very surprised that I put her in the JV 600 as she felt that is way to short for her. She led gun to wire to really energize our team with a varsity caliber performance of 1:55.
I can live with the score for now as I believe that we will keep improving.

Top 25 finishers
Rebecca Grusby kept our mile tradition alive at this meet running her last 800 3 seconds faster than her first 800 cruising away from the field in 5:20.61..
This is the way I like to teach our more advanced runners to race it and she is pretty high on the learning curve.
Anna Mason made the two heat final and moved up from the 16th and last qualifying spot to finish 11th. 10.33
Caraline Pham was 14th in the long jump in a season best of 13’10.5” and Katherine Cullen also had a season best placing 16th in 13’9.25”
Sonya Nair was 24th in the 600 in 1:52.61
