Notes on girls varsity race by Steven M.:

Today Newton South hosted Concord-Carlisle and Lincoln-Sudbury with all three teams coming in ranked top 15 in the state (LS #3, NS #7, CC #15 MSTCA) and the meet followed that script.   All three of these teams came into this meet undefeated within the DCL.  All three teams excuted fast team races and the order of the rankings coming in held in the scoring.

Lincoln-Sudbury remains undefeated in the DCL with a 4-0 record, Newton South is now 5-1 and Concord Carlisle is 3 - 2.  All three teams have challenges still waiting within the DCL as Newton South travels to Acton-Boxboro on Oct. 5th, Concord-Carlisle faces Westford and Weston on Oct. 5th and Lincoln-Sudbury will match up with Weston on Oct. 12th.

Anna Rhatigan also remains undefeated in the DCL with a 17:48 over the 2.95 mile course on the Newton South campus.  Anna and Marika Crowe of Lincoln-Sudbury ran most of the race side by side and Anna only secured the win in the last 100 meters with Marika finishing in a fast 17:53.

At two miles the team race was still close between Newton South and Lincoln-Sudbury, but Lincoln-Sudbury finished the last mile in strong fashion to pull away for the team victory.
Concord-Carlisle also ran a fine team race with Megan Ratcliffe finishing 3rd overall in this strong field.

Lincoln-Sudbury and Newton South were incredibly well matched through the top 3 three runners.  After that Lincoln-Sudbury won with team depth.
The 2nd and 3rd runners for both Lincoln-Sudbury and Newton South finished in a wave with Emily Knaul and Katie LaScaleia of Lincoln-Sudbury just edging out Lucrecia Aguilar and Anna Laurence of Newton South with all four finishing within 4 seconds.

When you look at the depth of these three teams it was a great race to watch.

double dual at NS, LS & CC; 27 Sept.

A big meet is today, Tuesday 27 September, at Newton South. The very strong teams of Lincoln-Sudbury and Concord-Carlisle will be at Newton South for a 4 pm double dual meet.
A double dual meet is where there are three teams but the scoring is that each school competes against the other schools in separately scored dual meets. So, NS will compete against LS for one dual meet and against CC in the other, simultaneously. (A tri-meet is where the scoring is done as one with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place team).

2nd double dual meet, Wayland & Westford Academy

Click here for photos by Martin Shiu

NSHS XC had its 2nd double dual meet Wednesday at Westford Academy.
A note from Steve on the girls team:

We will not be going to Amherst this year.  However the boys will race Ocean State in RI this weekend.

We are preparing for our big double dual meet next Tuesday at the Newton South campus vs LS and CC.  All three of our teams are ranked in the top 15 in the state.

Today was another fun meet.  We are now 4-0 over the regulars season and Anna Rhatigan is still undefeated.  Westford is well coached and have had teams and individuals win DCLs and place top 3 at All State so they are always a test.  Wayland has a great tradition and we respect them when we go against them.   This was two good wins for us.

Being 4 - 0 at this point in the season is nice, but what makes me happy as a coach is that our entire team from our varsity to our JV team is working hard to understand the process that it takes to be better team.  This is a group of fast learners and that more than our winning record gives hope for a nice future.

This team is very coachable.   When I give them a scouting report of the other teams followed by race plans these kids pay close attention and it is showing in our meets.
For as young as we are I feel that this team looks forward to challenges with a great attitude and that they can rely on each other to follow their plans.  Being this consistent with this much youth is a true sign that these kids are paying attention and learning to master different aspects of racing.

Anna Rhatigan took on a girl that beat Marika Crowe from LS the spring All State mile champion in their meet vs LS at LS.  So when Anna took charge of the race and won by 14 seconds that is what we need from our front runner.   Anna broke the new course record set by Emily Ruggiero of Westford (old record 19:19) with a time of 18:55 for 3 miles which is flying for this time of year.

Emily Ruggiero was 2nd.

We put 3 girls in the top 4 with Lucrecia in 3rd and Anna L. in 4th.   Lucrecia has just started the sport and is running at a high level early and really enjoying it.  Anna L. was a bit under the weather today, but gave a couragous effort for the team and had a fast time.

Emily Caggiano and Hannah are improving their times were joined by Margalit Glasgow giving us a very solid top 6.

We also had 6 girls in the top 8 and 9 in the top 13.   I love how so many young kids followed their suggested summer training and have come in giving us so much depth.  These girls certainly make being their coach a fun job as they are earnest in their learning and very dedicated in their approach to training and racing.

Coaches Notes:   Our experienced kids ran a hill workout followed by a fartlek combination on Monday so we went into this meet with some tired legs and I had our captains pace other kids so finish times were not a thing that concerned us today.  We are working hard now for later in the season and that is a normal approach to early season meets for us.

I have been pleased with our entire varsity coming into the season in good shape and they are running very solid for this time of year.  The Annas stepping up as front runners is positive sign.
Another big positive is the next wave of kids.  Leda, Margalit, Sara and Laura have all put in work over the summer to go from nice JV leaders to valuable varsity contributors.   With a young team we needed that to happen and they showed it off a bit today.

Also our JV team is gaining depth.  Naomi did a great job of pacing the pack and it was fun to see the Leahs do so well.  The 9th graders all took on their first race with a positive attitude and they are adding a lot to spirit of our team.

We are young as we will only graduate 2 girls and have only 2 juniors in our top 25 girls.   But the kids are learning and working hard and we have started the season as a very solid team.

Thanks,
Steven

DCL double dual meet; Boston Latin, Bedford

The first dual meet was held today at Franklin Park against Boston Latin and Bedford. The afternoon started with hot and humid weather and then breaking into rain showers and more sun.
Newton South won all races, boys and girls. The JV meet had some confusion because two other schools showed up for an unofficial scrimmage. They had travelled a long distance so no one complained but the other schools should have waited.
I have lots of OK photos but not enough time to process them now. Perhaps, this weekend.
(Sorry, messed up on white balance).
