All State Championship is this Saturday at Reggie Lewis Track
from Coach Norton:
Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
Newton South's sprint group will be competing in the "All State Track Meet" on Saturday Feb.26 at the Reggie Lewis indoor track facilities!
Special appearances from Youssef Elkorchi, Jeffrey Alkins, Grant Henderson, Patrick Kuffour, and Marini Lopci will give their best performances in their respective legs on the NS 4x200 relay team. Their objective is to reach a standing ovation from the crowd when they break into the top 5 and better their season PR of 1:33 seconds.
Other special guests will be Andrew O'Hagan, Brooks Remy, Cary Potochnik, and Marini Lopci. They will give an encore performance in their respective legs on the NS 4x400 relay team. They will bring down the curtain as they register their highest note in the top 5 and hopefully matching their season PR of 3:29 seconds.
Also arriving from the town of Newton Massachusetts, is the gracious, 6th seeded, Nicole Kestenburg, the high jumper extraordinaire. She will give an uplifting performance that will take your breath away, as she projects to shatter her own PR of 5'3".
So stand-up and put your hands together and cheer for your future alumnus, and leaders of tomorrow. Catch a full day of track & field competition featuring the Newton South sprint and distance ensemble performing live at the Reggie Lewis Center, start time 11:00am
"Good Student-Athletes are a terrible thing to waste"

I'd like to add that the entry list includes
the NSHS boys 4 x 800 meters
the NSHS girls 4 x 800 meters

Alumni Results 2/11-2/12
I may be missing a few from elsewhere, but there were some great performances by NS alumni last Friday and Saturday in Brighton and Medford
BU Valentine Invitational
Friday
800
43 590 Ryan-Davis, Juliet Middlebury 2:18.59
Saturday
1000
63 2113 Cha, Will Trinity 2:37.44
Mile
108 1281 Schneider, Marcus Bowdoin 4:28.19
http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/238265-2011-BU-Valentine-Invitational/video/457854-M-mile-H13
On Saturday morning Andrew and I both raced at Tufts:
3000
4 Wortham, Andrew Bates 8:53.73
Mile
3 Bargar, Cliff Tufts 4:40.36
It was a pretty fun day. In the morning I got to see Andrew race and qualify for the DIII New England Championships (coming off injury) before PRing in the mile for the first time since 2008 (and after running ~20 MPW + cross training for the last month while battling plantar fasciitis), then got to BU in time to see some of the afternoon races and hang out with Juliet, Marcus, Igal, and Sasha.

NS Track Highlights Meet #5
League Meet #5......A stepping stone to DCL Championships
Newton South J.V. and Varsity Sprint Team
The 55M Sprinters worked hard this season and have practiced the use of applying more force into the track to create faster forward maximum velocity.
The Throwers performed countless blocking techniques along with quick foot-pivoting that allowed their hips and shoulders to thrust forward to create farther shot put throws.
The High Jumpers did quick repetitions of the 'J' pattern approach with a regimental focus on getting their hips to travel forward in their penultimate step which sets them up for higher jumps.
And the 4x200 and 4x400 relay team's diligent effort to move the Newton South baton forward around the Reggie Lewis Track in the fastest time possible.
This meet #5 precedes the DCL Championships and some are looking forward to the start of spring track and field.
...Everything forward...for the fastest times!
...Everything forward...for the farthest distances and heights!
The Newton South sprint team gave their best effort this indoor season to reach these "forward" goals. Now is a good time to take a look back and reflect on the accomplishments of this season.
The personal goals achieved and the life lessons that were learned.
DCL Championships this Saturday Feb.12 at Reggie Lewis Center Starts 12:30pm

New Balance Boston Indoor Games
The international New Balance Boston Indoor Games was held at Reggie Lewis yesterday evening. As part of the meet there is a high school mile for both boys and girls. It was set up this year as a New England versus NY/NY team competition. From the DCL Andrea Keklak (LS) and Kathy O'Keefe were invited to compete representing New England for the girls. Each team had 6 runners. There were three girls from MA.
There was also one more high school runner, Lucas Verzbicas, the top US HS miler this year from the Chicago area. He was invited to run with the big boys in the men's 1 mile race finishing off the meet. He ran a 4:03. It was fascinating to see him lined up 2 over from Alan Webb who as a high schooler ran 3:53.43 outdoors (2001) breaking Jim Ryans record from 1965. Webb also ran 3:59.86 for the HS indoor record.
Oh, Lucas Verzbicas has just announced he will attend U. of Oregon. Are you happy, Steve?
