MIAA All State Championships 26 Feb. 2010

The Newton South girls scored 23 points and the boys 6 points
Kathy O'Keefe and Melanie Fineman took 1 - 2 in the mile continuing the tradition of Bridget Dahlberg.
The girls team results were not posted but from my calculations Newton North is the All State Champion. Congratulations!
Margo Gillis won the 1000 meters against Lincoln Sudbury's Andrea Keklak. It must have been an amazing race. Carla Forbes won the long jump and took 3rd in the 55 meters and she's only a freshman.

From the Oracle:
"According to the MIAA web site, there are over 8500 boys and over 8100 girls from over 230 schools participating in indoor track. Less than 15% of those kids qualify individually for the Division meets. Of those, less than 20%, or 24 kids per event, make it to the all-state meet. Finally, only six per individual event get to stand on the podium in the end. Those 8,000+ kids get whittled down to 60 on the podium, less than 1%. "

MSTCA Indoor Invitational story

Story by David Melly:
The meet on Sunday was truly one of the most incredible meets I’ve ever seen. Every heat, every race had amazing performances, both by Newton South athletes and the fields as a whole. It was almost as if the entire state woke up yesterday morning and collectively decided to set their PRs.
Fun fact: Every single winner of an individual running event except the boys’ mile set the state-leading mark at Coaches’ Elite.
Many races posted times that were ranked in the top 10 in the US. The girls’ 1000m race, including Newton South’s Melanie Fineman (currently 4th in the nation in the 1000), placed 5 girls among the top 10 times in the country. The rest of the DCL did its part too: Andrea Keklak of LS won the 600 in the second-fastest time in the country this season, Rebecca Robinson of Arlington won the 300 in the 6th-best time in the country, and Antony Taylor of Arlington won the mile in 4:22.
As far as NS performers go, the Lions’ held their own, with Ross McDonald winning the long jump in the state-leading mark of 21’7.25”. Senior Ezra Banks took third in the 55m dash, and Kathy O’Keefe won the mile in a state-leading 5:01.31. Yuji Wakimoto took 5th in the 1000m from the unseeded heat in a blistering 2:34.38. The always-reliable girls’ 4x8 took the last NS win of the day in 9:39.36.
An incredibly successful meet all-around, the heat has surely been turned up on MA indoor track, and the best part of the season is only just beginning. In its final dual meet, Newton South faces rival Lincoln-Sudbury on Friday.
