DCL Championships 24 October 2008
NS boys and girls both won.
The boys were heavily favored despite losing Beck to a foot injury and having Wortham and Finch coming back from injury. Marcus ran a PR great race for 9th overall and 5th on the team. Emerson and Wil were close. Hopefully all will come together for the state meet. Of note, is that 8 boys were in the top 15 which probably means they are DCL allstars.
The projected tight race between NS and LS girls was as expected - very close with the race going back and forth at each turn. NS was a few points ahead in the middle with LS catching up a little at the end. Karys pulled away consistently until 2 LS runners, Hylton and Keklak, closed a little at the end. Dahlberg held strong in 4th, Reed in 6th, O'Keefe in 7th and Golovkina in 10th for the one point win. Next up for the varsity is MA state divisional championship on 8 November.
Sophomore David Melly won the JV boys race with a time (17:32) which would be varsity top 5 for all other 11 teams in the DCL and would have been 27th in the varsity race. Alex Waltz' time of 17:52 3rd place would have been 34th in the varsity.
Freshman Anna Laurence won the JV girls race in 20:49 with Madison Willert 3rd in 21:52. These would have been 26th and 38th in the varsity race.
Victor Moisescu was 7th and Dylan Royce 18th in the freshman boys race.
NS ran its frosh girls in the JV race.
This Saturday is the coach's invitational in Wrentham where other NS runners will get their chance.

DCL XC championships, Friday 2 pm at Franklin Park
The DCL cross country championships are tomorrow, Friday, at Franklin Park in Boston. There are varsity, JV and freshman races. It all begins at 2 pm.
The Newton South boys are favored in the varsity.
My guess of the NS varsity team is: Wortham, Wakimoto, Long, Fen, Finch, Cha, Schneider, (Forrow, Shui, one more?)
Lincoln-Sudbury and Newton South girls are aiming for a big rematch of the recent dual meet won by LS.
From the past, 29 October 2005, The winning team:

"Here is a brief JV results list for those who are interested. I only know the guys side though.
Guys top 7 finishers: Andy Woo, Alex Pearce, Kian Olia, Westford Acadamey, Eddie Morales, Sam Ebb, Balazs Varady. The times were generally not too fast with Andy and Alex finishing in 18:56 and the rest of the top 7 finishers between about 19:15 and 19:45.
Thats all I have for now if I learn more/see the results sheet I'll try to post something better and more complete but I can only tell you what I remember seeing from about when I finished the race."

Dual meet Westford Academy, Tyngsboro, Wed. 4pm
The last dual meet is tomorrow, Wednesday, in Tyngsborough against Tyngsborough and Westford Academy. Part of the course goes into New Hampshire. Last year the race was in Tyngsboro in 90 degree humid conditions. It was a breakout race for Emerson. The Westford Academy boys have a 5-2 record and are a pretty good team.

JV Results.... please
Looking for a student(s) (or knowledgeable parent) to report the JV results, write stories about the races and individuals and generally promote the JV. I do this already with photos but need help with stories and results. This would be a great project for a student who is interested in journalism. I'll keep taking tons of photos. There are still a few more races for the JV. The next race is not until the 15th. Drop me a note.
Dyestat Coach of the Week
Sam brought it to my attention that Steven was named this week's Dyestat Coach of the Week!
There's not much I can say; the article pretty much speaks for itself. Reading this makes me remember many of the things I miss about being a Newton South athlete.

Off they go!
The girls varsity race sure had a lot of hype building up to it. Lots of spectators. South was in good position until close to the end where LS made a big push and pulled it off. Bridget and Juliet were not feeling well and had a tough time. Still it was very close and the big meets are coming up. These two teams should meet at least three more times; DCL championship, MA div states, and all states. They also might both go to a major team qualifier for the nationals.
This race was very very close. By time NS edged LS by 7 total seconds. 82:37 to 82:44. If this were a big meet the results could have been reversed because of LSs 5th runner being 23 seconds behind NSs 5th runner. Round 1 to LS.

The boys varsity race was fairly one sided. NS is ranked 1st in the state. LS is a strong team ranked 14th in the state but no match for the south pack. Ben was held out to rest a foot bruise from Saturday. Wil is training after an injury and should be racing in 2 1/2 weeks. Emerson, Marcus and Aden ran varsity and would be top runners for most other high schools in the state but not this year at NS. The course record of 14:58 was beaten by the 1st 6 runners. This must be a new course because I can't believe that others haven't run faster. It was reported in the local rag that the LS boys had won their last 36 dual meets. I think that was a typo. 26 sounds right. Concord-Carlisle was the previous dominant team. Well, it would be nice if this were the start of a new streak. Ben reports that NS should have a very strong and large incoming class next year. We will try to go to a Brown MS and Oak Hill MS meet and take photos for the blog.
