Story by Jennifer Reed
A sleepy, turkey-filled group of runners met at Newton South on Friday morning to embark on a road trip to Wappinger's Falls, NY. An uneventful car ride - save for some petty theft of crowns at a local Burger King- landed the girls at Bowdoin Park for a pre-race run of the course, which, after a long run across a large field, climbs gradually and sometimes steeply for the next 1.5 miles with the final 1.25 miles of the course heading back (downwards at times) to the start. The girls were advised to view the features of the course (aka hills, some might even have said mountain) as positive opportunities. Some teams were out doing workouts at the Park, which could have seemed intimidating to some, but not to our well-trained runners.
Saturday arrived bright and cool - perfect running weather (thankfully not the sleet and freezing rain that had been predicted earlier in the week, which we had today). Bowdoin Park was hopping as the girls arrived and it was hard not to get caught up in the excitement. The event's MC was eager to get the crowd and runners pumped up. A Don Bosco contingent from Hackensack, NJ came complete with drums, music and dancing fans. By far, they won the most spirited and enthusiastic award and in fact, placed 2nd for the Northeast boys so will be heading to Oregon! They'll be fun to watch. The Northeast Boys Qualifier was the first race of the day and proved to be a tough match up and therefore great viewing. The Northeast Girls Qualifier was next. You've seen the results on the blog, but it was an impressive show by the Newton runners, given the hilliness of the course and the fact that they had never run it before. This was by far the most challenging course the girls had ever run. The girls had a great start and held positions throughout and then finished strong. Kelsey's first place finish was a great thing to watch. All the girls had great races and helped secure a trip to Oregon. Lincoln-Sudbury - aka Mercury XC- also had a great day and took first place as a team, but all the runners had to wait for the next 2 and 1/2 hours until the results were announced. No one wanted to second guess the points. The NY Qualifiers ran next with the greatest excitement being in the girls race where the top runner from Adirondacks finished in 18:05! On a very challenging course! The next amazing feat was watching Fayetteville Manlius finish 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th! These girls have won the Nationals the last two years and given their performance it is no wonder.
Finally around 2:30, with quite a bit of pomp and circumstance, the MC for the event announced the placement of the teams! Photos were taken and the girls were whisked away to be registered for the trip to Oregon. The Newton and Lincoln-Sudbury girls had a great time hanging out during the registration period. By the time the girls emerged from the registration tent the park was empty, the Nike flags were down, and it looked as if nothing had ever happened...very strange to be sure. A number of Newton fans drove down for the day and provided some wonderful support for the girls - Kathleen Walsh, Neil Dahlberg, Mimi Karys, Teddi, Herb and Chris May, as well as Tom O'Keefe and his mother.
The journey continues.....next notes from Oregon...

Regional Nike Team Championship

The Newton South girls team will be at the northeastern regional Nike team championship on Saturday at 11:20 a.m. in Wappingers Falls, NY. The fastest 2 teams from each of 9 regions plus 4 at large selected teams plus the top 5 individuals from each region not on an advancing team will be flown to Portland Oregon by Nike for the national championship on 6 Dec.
From Nike:
"Win as a team, or win as one.
For the first time in harrier history, a single race - Nike Cross Nationals - will crown both individual and team national champions. Just as in past Nike Team Nationals events, the 22 best teams of each gender will compete. Only difference is, this year they'll be joined by the 45 fastest individuals from non-qualifying teams. It's true cross country, and a true national championship, whether you compete solo or for the team.
All high school runners are invited to prove who has the most guts on their stretch of turf and toe the line at the Nike Cross Regionals."
Teams to watch in the girls northeastern region championship: Newton Centre Athletics from Newton, MA; Mercury TC from Sudbury, MA; Tomahawk XC Club from Glastonbury, CT; Suamme XC Club from Emmaus, PA.

NSHS XC & track & Field Alumni reunion

About 50 people showed up for a very nice running alum get together. I still don't know how it happened. Word of mouth, a few Emails. I think it will grow in future years with the whole present senior class always coming since they are so tight as a team. Steve cooked multiple lasagnas and other items. People brought all kinds of goodies. A highlight was the McChesney twins playing with Brio trains the whole time without a fight. But, then again, who could imagine a McChesney fighting?

29 October 2005; DCL Championships
It was 32 degrees and snowing hard the whole time. The snow gradually started to stick and maybe reached 2 inches. This is usually harder to run in than 25 degrees and dry unless the the ground is frozen into footsteps from the last race before freezing.
We really needed those tents!
From the JV race I believe:

South girls average 18:58 taking 4 of the top 15 places.
The boys had a rough day with all well off their PRs finishing 7th as a team.
Mansfield in D1 surprised many of the other teams to win for the boys.
The course was wet and muddy and slow but more heavy rain held off until awards.

MIAA All State Championships 15 Nov. 2008

The MIAA All State Championship is tomorrow Saturday 15 Nov. 2008 at Franklin Park in Boston.
The meet is divided by school size into two divisions. The 3 Massachusetts regions (East, Central and West) had championships last Saturday to determine who runs tomorrow. In each division the top 16 teams and 40 individuals who are not on a team get to race. Each race will have (16 * 7) + 40 = 152 runners.
To see all rules and other information about the race see:
http://www.miaa.net/cross-country-track08-format.pdf

Starting Times:
Girls’ Division II – 11:00 a.m.
Boys’ Division II – 12:00 p.m.
Girls’ Division I – 11:30 a.m.
Boys’ Division I – 12:30 p.m.
Awards Ceremony - 1:30 P.M. Approximately

The girls D1 race should again be between NS and Lincoln-Sudbury. At the race last week NS's 5th runner was ahead of LS's 4th runner. This was the difference in the meet and with more fast runners in tomorrow's race the 5th runner becomes even more important. I should add that Kirsten Kasper from North Andover might be the favorite in this race.
The girls D2 meet probably has the 3rd best team in the state, Hamilton-Wenham. We'll see how their time compares to D1 team Haverill. D2 also has senior Emily Jones from Bromfield who is ranked 9th nationally by Dyestat.
The boys D1 race is very much up in the air. Newton South was ranked 1st in the state most of the year but multiple injuries has knocked them down to 5th as of 8 Nov. NS has so much depth that they still have a good chance of pulling out a win. None of the boys had a great race at the last weeks eastern championships most being well off their PRs. The other likely teams in the mix are: St. John's Prep, Amherst-Pelham Reg., Methuen, NASHOBA Reg., Mansfield. Also, Newton North was very strong last week but I think their 5th runner might not be fast enough to get a team win. Three or four other teams could also be in the mix. The individual winner should be very close with Aden, Galebach, Bush, Ali, Aylaian, Jones and others.
In D2 boys, Wellesley is one of the favorites.
See you there for a warm wet muddy? race.

Running after HS & college

I missed the NEAC XC championships this year but Newton resident and former Newton North coach Jon Waldron didn't.
Here are more photos by CSU running buddy Jamie Doucett.
Jamie just told me that Galebach used to live in his town of Andover and if he hadn't moved to Medford, Andover would have finished 3rd in the race.

The MIAA eastern division 1 State Championships were held today at Franklin Park. The girls took 1st in division 1 with a score of 29 points, incredibly low for this meet. Lincoln-Sudbury was 2nd with 35 points. NS averaged 18:44 on the relatively slow soggy course. Haverill was 3rd with 90 points, Billerica 4th with 149 and Chelmsford 5th with 203 points. NS and LS took 10 of the top 15 places.

Come early if you don't want a long walk from parking.

Last year Newton South girls won upsetting the favored Lincoln-Sudbury team.
In 2007 NS boys (all juniors) were 3rd in this meet.
This year the girls race should be between NS and LS again. Haverhill is expected to follow.
The boys will have a close race with Methuen and St. John's Prep. I expect the boys team to all finish within 30 seconds of each other.

State meet divisional championships are Sat. 8 Nov

From Newton North vs Brookline 30oct08

The State meet divisional championships are Sat. 8 Nov.

In the meantime I thought I'd post photos from the Newton North vs Brookline dual meet last week. It was an amazing meet held at Brookline's home course in Larz Anderson Park. The course was very well flagged. The anthem was played before the races. And before the varsity races the runners were announced like at a championship baseball game. There was also a large timing clock. To top it off the weather was beautiful.

MSTCA Coaches Invitational in Wrentham 1 Nov. 2008

I couldn't be there but word spread fast about how the girls I sophomore race went completely off course with no results possible. The boys II sophomore race also was partly off course. My problem with the race is that it is awful for spectators. Out and back. You see the start and finish. It is much better for the sport if loops are set up for viewing and cheering.
