Ocean State Cross Country Invitational

This was a gigantic event with teams from all over New England, New York and New Jersey. Newton South was invited to run both boys and girls in the championship race. The boys finished 6th, 1st MA team and the girls finished 5th, tied with Lincoln Sudbury with 147 points but lost to them after 6th runner tiebreaker. They were the top two MA finishers, both ahead of the nationally ranked Bromfield team.

I had to miss the event but hopefully others can supply a few photos.
Note that a volunteer (not Newton) took over 3000 photos of most runners. Another volunteer also took many photos. Follow links on the Ocean State site to see these photos.

Times from Weston/Boston Latin

In many ways, this was a good meet for the teams to fine-tune their running - the boys going out hard, and then running in a pack. Because of both the heat and the nature of the races, the times weren't earth-shattering, but here is what I had on my watch:

All top 8 boys (see photo) crossing in 18:25, Cliffbar in 18:50, Kyle in 18:54

Girls (in order)

Kelsey 22:07
Melanie 22:23
Sonya 22:23
Nina 22:25
Hanna 22:26
Elizabeth 22:27
Juliet 22:35

The girl's won 15-50 against Weston and Boston Latin. Kelsey took off with about 400m to go to win. Juliet showed her 5:15 mile speed kicking in to take 7th. The freshman took in their 1st 5K with the heat. The times were SLOW for all runners.

The lead pack at the mile. Melanie, Sonya, Kelsey, Nina, Hannah. (Olga was sick and Madeleine sat this one out).

The rest are coming off Bear Cage Hill.

At the finish line. Newton South boys won 15-50 against both Weston and Boston Latin. It was very hot. The team ran hard for a mile and then let up as much as possible. I think these 8 juniors all got a time of 18:26. The Weston and BL runners were closing a little at the end.
